Dehumidifier Drainage Guide: Pump, Gravity, or Bucket?

If you have a floor drain below your unit, use gravity drain. It costs nothing and requires zero maintenance. If you have no lower drain, get a dehumidifier with a built-in pump for hands-free operation. The tool below finds the right setup based on your specific situation.

Gravity Drain vs Built-in Pump vs External Pump

Each drainage method has clear trade-offs. Here is how they compare on cost, convenience, and compatibility.

When You Need a Pump

A pump becomes necessary in specific situations. If any of these describe your setup, skip gravity drain and go straight to a pump solution.

Basement with no floor drain

The most common scenario. Your dehumidifier sits in a basement, but the nearest drain is a utility sink that is at the same height or higher than the unit. Gravity cannot push water uphill. A built-in pump on the GE 50-Pint or Honeywell 50-Pint sends water up to 16 feet to that sink automatically.

Vacation home or rental property

If you cannot be present to empty a bucket, a pump-equipped unit draining to a sink or out a window runs indefinitely. Pair it with a Wi-Fi model like the Midea Cube 50 (with an external pump) to monitor humidity remotely and get alerts if something stops working.

Crawl space with no gravity path

Crawl spaces rarely have convenient floor drains. A commercial unit like the AlorAir Sentinel HD55 handles gravity drain to a sump pit if one exists. If it does not, an external condensate pump paired with the AlorAir routes water wherever you need it.

You travel frequently or work long hours

A full bucket triggers auto-shutoff, which means the dehumidifier stops working while you are away. In humid conditions, a stopped unit can let humidity climb back above 60% in hours. A pump ensures continuous operation regardless of your schedule.

Drainage Tips for Crawl Spaces

Crawl spaces present unique drainage challenges. The confined area, difficult access, and lack of standard plumbing make drainage setup more important to get right the first time.

Drain to a sump pit when possible

If your crawl space has a sump pit with a sump pump, run a gravity drain hose directly into the pit. The sump pump handles the rest. This is the most reliable crawl space drainage setup and requires zero electricity beyond what the sump pump already uses.

Use rigid PVC over flexible hose for long runs

For drain runs longer than 10 feet, flexible hose tends to sag and create low spots where water pools instead of flowing. Use 3/4" PVC pipe secured to floor joists with pipe hangers. Maintain a consistent 1/8" per foot downward slope toward the drain point.

Skip the bucket entirely

Crawl space dehumidifiers like the AlorAir Sentinel HD55 do not even include a collection bucket. They are designed for continuous drain operation only. This is intentional: you should never rely on a bucket in a space you access infrequently. A full bucket means a stopped dehumidifier, and a stopped dehumidifier in a crawl space means mold growth can resume within days.

Insulate the drain line in cold climates

In northern climates where crawl space temperatures drop below 40°F, water in an exposed drain line can freeze and create a blockage. Wrap exposed sections of drain hose or PVC with pipe insulation. The AlorAir Sentinel HD55 operates down to 36°F, but the drain line itself has no freeze protection.
